Common questions
The things people ask before they get in touch. If your question is not here, just call us.
Working with us
How much will it cost?
We quote a fixed fee once we understand what you need, and it holds for the engagement. There are no hourly charges for routine work.
Is the first consultation really free?
Yes. No charge and no obligation, and it ends with a written quote.
Can I switch accountants part way through the year?
Yes. There are no tax consequences to switching and you can do it at any time. We write to your previous accountant for professional clearance and your records.
How quickly will you reply?
Within one working day for any enquiry. If something will take longer to answer properly, we will tell you that within a day as well.
Do you work with clients outside your area?
Yes. We act for clients across the UK and overseas using cloud accounting, video meetings and digital identity verification.
What do you need from me to get started?
Proof of identity and address, details of your previous accountant if you have one, and access to your records. We will send a clear list.
Why do you need to verify my identity?
Accountancy firms are subject to the Money Laundering Regulations and must verify every client before work starts. It is quick and done digitally.
Our services
Do you only act for wealthy individuals?
No. We act for start-ups, contractors and owner-managed businesses alongside clients with more complex affairs.
Which software do you work with?
Mainly Xero and QuickBooks. If you use something else we will tell you honestly whether moving is worth the disruption.
Do you give investment advice?
No. We are not regulated to advise on investments. We work alongside your IFA or wealth manager on the tax consequences of what they recommend.
Can you deal with HMRC on my behalf?
Yes. We act as your agent, handle correspondence and deal with enquiries. Fee protection insurance is available if you want the cost of an enquiry covered.
When should inheritance tax planning start?
Earlier than most people assume. Gifting generally needs you to survive seven years for the full benefit, and several reliefs depend on conditions being met over time.
I have not filed for a few years. Can you help?
Yes. Bringing things up to date voluntarily is almost always better than waiting for HMRC to make contact. We will explain the likely penalty position before we start.
About the firm
Are you regulated?
Yes. Indus Advisors Limited is a firm of ICAEW Chartered Accountants, bound by ICAEW's Code of Ethics. Details of ICAEW's regulations are at icaew.com/regulation.
Do you hold professional indemnity insurance?
Yes, as ICAEW requires. Details of the insurer and territorial coverage are available on request.
What if I am not happy with your service?
Tell us. Our complaints procedure sets out how we handle it and how to escalate to ICAEW if you are still not satisfied.
How is my data handled?
Under the UK GDPR, as set out in our privacy policy. We are registered with the Information Commissioner's Office.
