VAT and payroll
The deadlines that come round every month or quarter, handled quietly in the background.
VAT
VAT is unforgiving: the deadlines are fixed, the penalty regime is points-based, and the rules on what you can recover are more detailed than most people expect. Partial exemption, the reverse charge in construction, imports and the various flat rate and margin schemes all reward getting advice once rather than guessing quarterly.
- Registration, deregistration and scheme selection
- Quarterly returns filed under Making Tax Digital
- Partial exemption calculations
- Domestic reverse charge for construction services
- Imports, postponed VAT accounting and goods sold overseas
- Land and property VAT, including the option to tax
- Error corrections and disclosures handled properly
Payroll
Payroll has to be right the first time, because your staff notice immediately when it is not. We run it, file the RTI submissions on or before each pay date, handle the pension assessments, and send you a single figure to pay HMRC.
- Weekly, fortnightly or monthly payroll runs
- Payslips, RTI submissions and year-end P60s
- Starters, leavers, statutory sick, maternity and paternity pay
- Auto-enrolment pension assessment and uploads
- Benefits in kind, P11D and payrolling of benefits
- Construction Industry Scheme returns and subcontractor verification
- Directors' payroll set at the level that suits the profit extraction plan
Why they sit together
VAT and payroll are the two things that will bite you fastest if they slip, and they both depend on bookkeeping being current. Clients who give us all three rarely see a penalty, because nothing is being reconstructed at the last minute.
Common questions
VAT and payroll
Do I need to register for VAT?
You must register once your taxable turnover passes the registration threshold on a rolling twelve-month basis, or if you expect to pass it within thirty days. Some businesses register voluntarily below that. We check your position at the consultation.
Is the flat rate scheme worth it?
Sometimes, and less often than it used to be. It depends on your sector percentage and how much VAT you incur on costs. We will run both and show you the difference.
Can you take over payroll mid-year?
Yes. We take the year-to-date figures from your current provider and continue from the next pay run.
What about benefits like company cars and health cover?
We handle P11D reporting, and we can set up payrolling of benefits if that suits you better.
